Who can Foster?

Anyone can apply to be a Foster Carer.  It does not matter if you are married, single, gay or lesbian, young or old.  There are only a few factors that can prevent someone becoming a Foster Carer and each application is reviewed individually.  These assessments are carried out in accordance with the National Minimum Standards and are all treated equally regardless of culture, ethnicity or religion.

In order for us to safeguard the children and young people in our care, we need to ensure our Foster Carers meet the following criteria:-

  • Applicants must be over 21 years of age, there is no upper age limit as long as you are physically and mentally fit.
  • You must have a spare room available.  If you are currently undergoing home improvements to incorporate a spare room, or about to move house, the works/move must be completed before you apply.
  • No serious criminal convictions.  If you have been convicted of any violent or serious crimes against children or young people, you will not be able to proceed any further.  However, some convictions may not discount you and must be disclosed at the beginning of the assessment process.  Should any convictions be highlighted at a later stage your application would be closed.
  • You must have a good level of verbal and written English.
  • The assessment process is quite intrusive and it is vital applicants are open and honest throughout.

The most important factors are that Foster Carers have the time, patience and understanding to meet the individual needs of each child and young person.
